How to increase your insight by filtering Google Analytics Data. Identify regional versions of Google sending you traffic along with the keyword and the ADWORDS campaign term which triggered the ad.

At the recent Search Engine Strategies Conference in London Jim Sterne stated:

We have too much data but not enough insight

There are many questions and just as many questions buried deep in the data that web analytics tools provide.

Google Analytics and ADWORDS are intimately connected to each other – integrating Web analytics and ADWORDS is a matter of a few clicks.

In this post I’ll illustrate how you can identify which regional Search Engine is sending you traffic and which are the keywords locals are using to search. I’ll show you which Google Analytics Filters to use.

Why this is important

As your ADWORDS campaigns grow and you begin to count your keywords by the thousands (and beyond) you’ll reach a point where adding new keywords is not going to increase overall campaign efficiency. In fact the “napalm approach” (adding keywords to groups organized by language) can actually reduce CTRs and conversions. You need to organize your campaign not only by language but also by country.

How to identify regional Search Engines and Keywords Used Locally

Here’s what you’re going to learn from this post:

Recognize the Regional edition of the Search Engine which has generated the visit

Capture the Keyword used in the query

Identify the Campaign which triggered the visit

Create a new Profile for your Google Analytics Filtering

Create new Google Analytics Filters which allow you to extract the information you need …

2 filters are required

1st filter

Extract Top Level Domain and Keyword

This is the data you can copy & paste into the filter fields

Referral

Referral

(\?|&)(q|p)=([^&]*)

Custom Field 1

$A1 — $B3

(Google Analytics Filter 1: Extracts Referring regional domain and associated keyword and writes the data in a temporary field that is carried over to the next filter …)

2nd filter

Extracting Campaign Keyword

This is the data you can copy & paste into the filter fields of your 2nd filter

Custom Field 1

(.*)

Campaign Term

(.*)

Campaign Term

$A1 ($B1)

(Google Analytics Filter 2: Writes data from previous Custom field 1, extracts ADWORDS campaign term, re-writes previous 2 fields to Campaign Term)

You’ll see the resluts of the filters under

Traffic Sources >> Overview >> Keywords

and this is the final result:

As you can see in the example this specific visit:

was generated on regional search engine google.co.uk

villas with pools rome was used by the visitor who clicked through to the website

villas in rome was the campaign term which triggered the visit via google.co.uk

Now you can segment your traffic and keywords with great precision and distinguish how the UK is searching compared to the US or Australia and feed this information back into your ADWORDS campaigns.

If you’re interested in knowing more about Google Analytics filtering and data mining Advanced Web Metrics by Brian Clifton is an essential tool and of great help – the second edition of Brian’s book is hot off the press.

Enjoy!

Tracking you performance is essential to your online business. The general level of awareness you achieve with web analytics can literally turn your online presence into a business. That’s a fact of life.

How to track conversions on WordPress Contact forms, introduced the necessity to monitor the performance of your blog when users interact, especially if they are paid users. Tracking is essential to your success – I know I’ve said that before but there are so many paid campaigns out there where monitoring is an unknown word – your campaigns might be in this exact same situation …

If you’re running a WordPress blog you certainly have installed one or more plugins used to generate automatically contact forms. They’re great and work fine – but they have one great big limitation: No thank you page.

A thank you page is used to confirm that your request for further information has been sent and someone will be in touch soon. This is always the case when you write up your own contact form, but not in WordPress – all the plugins I’ve seen over the past months “encapsulate” this function within the plugin code hence the URL doesn’t change when forms are submitted and there is nowhere to place your tracking code.

Lets take a look at a live example I’ll be blogging about soon (hopefully …)

Plan your Search Advertising Campaign

Identify posts you wish to promote. You’ll have to prepare for this. Do your research and find keywords you can use to write new and original posts (yeah they’re suppose to be “quality content” posts …)

Close posts with a call to action

Make it simple and immediate for your readers to interact – remember KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid!)

Place a link to a form you can make tailored to fit your needs. The link you can see in the previous screenshot leads to a form:

This is the form – it’s simple and goes straight to the point – no BS, it takes just a few seconds to compile …

this is the message users get once the form has been complied and sent (well there is more there but I don’t want to show you now).

This (thank you) page carries the tracking code – here is where you need to add the code your analytics suite offers.

In Google Analytics you setup your goals. You’ll find clicking on the edit option in your control panel …

With Google Analytics you can set up to 4 goals – for each one a script is generated – put in in the page just before the </body> tag.

Now you are ready to track your blog’s performance.

With this procedure in place tracking goals on a WordPress blog is a breeze

Blogs and blogging are a central part of any “modern” web marketing effort today and will be as far as I can see for some time in the future. Actually for a small and even medium sized enterprise, a blog can more than enough to make an online presence significant.

There is a lot of talk (or should I say hype) about social media and the important role it is playing, but if you are looking for quality traffic and some solid business leads, and you are in a traditional line of business a blog is what you need – today.

Measuring the performance of your web marketing efforts is not only possible but essential to keep the boat afloat. Google analytics are bringing about a general awareness related to web metrics and website performance: people are asking more questions and want reliable answers to increase their ROI and reduce CPA.

Measuring performance is related to your objectives.

You can use a blog to run a business. If you are running a WordPress blog the plenthora of plugins and additional functions made available makes everything very easy to with little to no programming skills required for most functionalities.

One very important function is a contact form – there are so many available and it’s a matter of minutes before your blog has contact forms ready to use. Same goes for e-commerce plugins.

Let’s focus on and take as an example the contact forms I just mentioned – they have a big limitation when it comes to measuring conversions, i.e. if you wish to track:

how many users compiled a form

which keywords they used when they compiled the form

The WordPress plugins that I recently examined were all missing something very important: a thank you page.

Why do you need a page ?

Because that’s where you’ll place the tracking code you need to monitor performance and understand if the flow of actions is working as expected or not.

For those who develop WordPress Plugins a slight modification such as the one I just described (= make the thank you page independent) is becoming a necessity.

But right now, if you need to track performance and run a blog you need to address things in a different manner. here’s how.

Set up a contact form with a thank you page – programming can be done in php (FIND SOME ONLINE RESOURCES). If you don’t have one, setup a Google Analytics Account and setup your goals – indicate the URL of your thank you page.

Embed the javascript generated by the system and save your thank you page.

You might want to modify any existing plugin – don’t, it won’t work. The problem is the repeated presence of captcha on category or tag pages inducing fatal errors.

By doing so you can create you unique call to action on each post inviting your readers to contact you, subscribe to your newsletter, or place an order.

Sounds too complicated ? It’s not – I’ll show you in my next post
