del.icio.us - tips on how to improve your profile with the bundle tags function

I enjoy using del.icio.us as much as millions of others like yourself. Social bookmarking is a great way to share information and network with others online who share similar interests.

The problem I see with many user profiles is they are messy. What do I mean by messy ? Well, they are not usable.

Let me explain with an example.

Most user profiles provide an alphabetical listing of tags like this:

typical del.icio.us users profile with a list of tags in alphabetical order

When the list gets long, after tagging a few hundred pages, the number of tags begins to run into the thousands. With so many words (=tags) it is difficult to understand what they are referring to – a word can have a very different meaning depending on how and where it is used.

Well the people at del.icio.us solved this problem with the bundle tags function.

A bundle is like a folder you can use to store your tags. Each bundle can be used to represent a topic, an object, or whatever else you wish it to be.

The advantage is that someone who doesn’t know you can immediately understand what you are interested in and if there may be some links to interesting web sites: This means more time spent on your del.icio.us profile and a good chance they will subscribe to a feed from any one of your tag pages.

Setting up a tag bundle is very simple – all you need to do is to login to your account and click on the settings link:

follow the setting link that is positioned in the upper right hand corner of your web page once you have logged into your del.icio.us account

Once on the settings page click on bundle tags and you’ll be sent to a new page where you can create and organize your existing tags into bundles. It’s simple although time consuming, especially if you have already tagged a large number of pages – but it’s worth it.

In fact it improves the user’s experience. Take a look at my del.icio.us profile:

You’ll see bundles that are descriptive and anticipate:

  • the topic covered
  • what your profile is about

All this without having to review a list of hundreds of words. It’s so much easier and intuitive with tag bundles.

You can assign a tag to more than one bundle.

If you put your bookmarks out there to be used, then it must be easy to do so – that’s why the del.icio.us team thought of bundles.

Take a look at my del.icio.us profile -

  • don’t you think it is easier to use ?
  • were you able to find things quickly ?
  • isn’t it a neat way to tell people what your interests in just a few seconds ?

Let me know what our experience is and if you have used tag bundles.
