Google Supplemental Results reported on Forbes

Google Supplemental results are making headlines as new stories reach mainstream news. Earlier today Forbes reported on the Google Supplemental Results with a very impressive title: Condemned To Google Hell. Sounds pretty scary doesn’t it ! And if that didn’t scare the pants off you then all you had to do was read on just a bit more to learn that a website was recently sent to Google hell and lost approximately $500,000 along the way. I took a look at website suffering of supplemental illness and ran a quick check … There’s no doubt the site has been hit hard by supplementals – there are just about 12 pages left of just under 500 (YAHOO! reposts 488 pages in their index – Google 290). The site was reportedly ranking top 20 for very competitive keyword phrases (thus the loss in a considerable amount of revenue). I took a closer look at things. A few years back I had some contacts with people from Israel operating in this line of business – it was tough back then so I can imagine what the level of competition must be today. Getting back to the website I wasn’t impressed with the website architecture. Too much on page javascript that could be placed in separate files expediting downloads. Example of titles in graphcal format instead of textWhat surprised me were the page titles – important keywords like Engagement Rings, Diamonds, or Wedding Bands are images, not text. What a wasted opportunity … I thought perhaps the web designer has used this technique only on the home page to increase page appeal but I found this approach systematically repeated throughout the site. The page template is far from optimized. The on site content is pushed way below the fold of the page. In many circumstances I have seen just small changes that shift on site content closer to the beginning of the page bring a significant increase in rankings (all other factors being equal). Page footer could do with revisiting as well – Why would you want a link to your sitemap on all the pages of your website ? But what I believe tipped the boat was the ratio between overall page content to what is useful content. I ran a check on a few pages as I suggested in a post on testing your website content for supplemental results. In most cases content fell significantly below 50% of overall content. This is what most likely triggered supplemental results indexing. So just in case you were wondering, supplemental results are not a penalty but only the consequence of a series of factors that can have serious consequences … Matt Cutts took a stand on the Forbes article and revealed some questionable linking strategies that did not have a direct impact on supplemental indexing. Mr. Sanar, I hope you have the opportunity to read this post – you were seriously over charged for questionable consulting services and linking strategies. You are welcome to review some reliable information on Search Engine Optimization and linking strategies that I have to offer – free of charge …
